History

Surround Vision

Born and raised in Houston, TX, Nicky Sims discovered her passion for television at an early age, attending 3 years of acting school at the renowned Zachary Scott Academy by the age of 11. At 15, Nicky discovered the visual tool that would change the way she watched television forever...the splitter. Using a 4-way Radio Shack television splitter, Nicky carried every television in the house into the livingroom, stacked them in the shape of a pyramid, and drove the coaxials into the splitter. Impressed by the visual presentation, her friends and family encouraged the installment, donating old tv's and VCRs to the cause. The result was a successful 4-year stint in the local nightlife circuit, delivering visual content and media installments across Texas. Her home in LA now includes the massive collection of tubes, totalling 22 analog televisions, appropriately dubbed "surround vision".

Editing

Nicky's editing career began at the early age of 16, utilizing two VCR's and a handheld video camera. Bored at home one day, she began piecing together her own music video for Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" using footage from Disney's "Dumbo". The enthusiastic response to this video led to small, but significant projects for Nicky, including friend's vacation movies, skateboarding videos, and local music projects. By 1999, she was ready for college and knew exactly what she wanted from life...a physical memory that could be viewed over and over again. A week after graduation, Nicky was off to the land of big dreams, Los Angeles. After some part-time work at a visual effects house, Nicky landed a position as an AVID preditor and camera operator at Comcast's E! Entertainment. Her 2-year stay at E! involved editing a number of the network's hottest shows for their broadband website, such as Dr. 90210, The Simple Life, The Soup, House of Carters, and many more. After that, Nicky began her freelance career, editing promos and events for local production companies. Her most recent jobs include 30 second spots for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Gossip Girl, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and many more. Nicky now edits using Avid Media Composer at her studio downtown.

Camera Operation

Raised by a family of photographers, Nicky picked up a camera at a very young age. When she was 15, a friend donated his shoulder-mounted Panasonic VHS X8CCD to Nicky. She took the camera everywhere (including school, where she was booted from many classrooms for recording lectures), capturing the real life of typical teenagers, and social hang-outs. As time progressed, video technology did as well, providing her with a handful of cameras over the years, from analog to digital, and eventually HD. Nicky's camera operation resume includes studio shoots, such as True Hollywood Story and Comcast's Kid's Month, as well as concerts, such as Ludacris live, and premieres including 'Jackass 2' and 'Running With Scissors', among others. Nicky now shoots using the Sony HVR-Z1U, capturing SD and HD footage at it's finest.
